The 90-day OCI linking rule, explained for UK OCI holders

· 6 min read

OCI card with a renewed British passport — linking the OCI within the 90-day window

Got a new British (or other foreign) passport? There is an Indian-side step that is easy to overlook: your OCI record generally needs to be linked to the new passport, and a commonly referenced window is within about 90 days of receiving it. This applies to OCI holders of any age who are eligible for online linking, and it comes up again each time a passport is renewed.

Matrix NRI is a UK preparation service: we help with the documents and the portal upload, while the High Commission and VFS make the final decision. This guide explains what the 90-day window means, why it keeps applying for life, the under-20 and first-passport-after-20 situations, and what to do if you think you have already passed the window.

What the 90-day window means

When your passport number changes, the OCI record that still points to your old passport is out of date. Linking updates the OCI to your current passport so the two documents match at immigration. The widely cited guidance is to complete this within roughly 90 days of the new passport being issued.

For a simple change — a renewed passport, the same name, and a valid OCI card — standard online OCI Link is generally enough, and many cases are completed without a VFS visit. Where there is more going on, such as a name change, a nationality change, or a lost or damaged card, the case generally needs OCI Miscellaneous instead (the new-booklet route at /oci-miscellaneous-service) rather than a simple online update.

It keeps applying at any age — for life

A common myth is that linking stops mattering once you reach a certain age. It does not. There is no upper age cut-off: adults of any age link the OCI to each new passport, aiming for the same roughly 90-day window. Turning 50, 60, or older does not remove the step — a new passport is simply linked again.

So the linking step recurs for life: each time you renew your passport, the OCI is generally linked to the new one within the recommended window. It helps to note the issue date of each new passport so the update is not left late.

If you are under 20

For OCI holders under 20, a new passport is generally handled by online OCI Link only — a new booklet is not usually needed at this age. Each new passport during these years is typically a straightforward online update, within the same recommended window.

The one transition to plan for happens at 20, which is covered next.

The first passport after turning 20

If the OCI was originally issued while the holder was under 20, the first passport renewal after turning 20 generally needs a one-time OCI Miscellaneous / new booklet rather than a simple online link. It is a single step tied to that first adult passport.

After that one-time re-issue, normal OCI Link applies again for future passport changes, so later renewals return to the standard online route within the roughly 90-day window. If you are not sure whether this one-time step applies to you, it is worth checking before you book anything.

What if you have already passed 90 days?

First, some reassurance about what does not happen: missing the window is not an automatic cancellation of your OCI, and it is not an automatic rejection. The OCI does not stop being valid simply because the date has passed.

What it generally becomes is a case review. A late fee or penalty of approximately £23, plus VFS charges, may apply, and some cases may need to go through OCI Miscellaneous rather than a simple online link. The exact route and any fee are confirmed by VFS for your situation. The practical step is to gather your dates and documents and have the case looked at, rather than leaving it longer.

Get the right route confirmed

If you have a new passport, the simplest next step is to confirm whether your case is a standard online link or an OCI Miscellaneous one before you commit. Send your passport issue date and a photo of your OCI card on WhatsApp, and we can confirm which route fits.

When you are ready, our OCI Link service handles the document check, photo and signature formatting, and portal upload — you can read more on the OCI Link page (/oci-link-current-passport). For name changes, lost or damaged cards, or the one-time step after turning 20, see the OCI Miscellaneous page (/oci-miscellaneous-service). We confirm the route and any costs before you pay.

Common questions

Do I need to link my OCI after a passport renewal?
Generally yes. Whenever your passport number changes, the OCI is usually linked to the new passport, ideally within about 90 days.
Does this stop at a certain age?
No — there is no upper age limit. Adults of any age link the OCI to each new passport, for life.
Is online OCI Link enough on its own?
For a straightforward passport-number change, generally yes. A name change, a nationality change, or a lost or damaged card generally needs OCI Miscellaneous instead.
What happens if I miss the 90-day window?
It is treated as a case review, not a cancellation or rejection. A late fee of around £23 plus VFS charges may apply, and some cases may need Miscellaneous; the exact position is confirmed by VFS.
My OCI was issued when I was under 20 — what changes at 20?
The first passport renewal after turning 20 generally needs a one-time OCI Miscellaneous / new booklet. After that, standard OCI Link applies for future passports.
