OCI Link vs OCI Miscellaneous — which do I need?
If you already hold an OCI card and something has changed — a new passport, a new name, or a lost card — you may be unsure whether you need OCI Link or OCI Miscellaneous. They are two different services, and choosing the right one first saves time and avoids a wasted VFS trip. This page explains the difference in plain English. Matrix NRI is independent UK preparation support; the final decision sits with the relevant Indian authority.
Quick answer
In plain terms, the question is usually "a reissue, or only an online update?" An online update (OCI Link) keeps your existing OCI and links it to your new passport; a reissue (OCI Miscellaneous) issues a new booklet with updated details. For a straightforward passport-number change — same name, valid card — the route is generally OCI Link, an online update that connects your existing OCI to the new passport. OCI Miscellaneous is the separate new-booklet route, used when there is a bigger change such as a name or nationality change, a lost or damaged card, a correction, or the one-time new booklet at the first passport after turning 20 (if the OCI was issued under 20). If you are not sure, send your OCI card and passport details on WhatsApp and we confirm the route before you pay.

Choose OCI Link if…
Your passport number has changed (a renewal), your name is the same, and your OCI card is valid and undamaged. This is the common case after a passport renewal, and it is generally handled as an online update within the recommended window. Linking applies at any adult age — there is no upper age cut-off — and it comes up again each time your passport is renewed.
Choose OCI Miscellaneous if…
There is a bigger change than a passport number: a name change (for example after marriage), a nationality change, a lost, stolen or damaged card, a correction to your details, or a major change in appearance. In these cases a new booklet is generally issued through OCI Miscellaneous rather than a simple online link. There is also one specific age-related case, explained next.
The age cases (often misunderstood)
- Under 20: a new passport is generally handled by online OCI Link / update — a new booklet is not usually needed at this age.
- First passport after turning 20 (when the OCI was originally issued under 20): generally a one-time OCI Miscellaneous / new booklet, and after that normal OCI Link applies again for future passports.
- Turning 50 on its own does not need a new booklet — that is a common myth. Adults of any age simply link each new passport.
The 90-day window (applies to OCI Link)
When your passport changes, the OCI is generally linked to the new passport, ideally within about 90 days of it being issued. It is good practice to note each new passport's issue date so the update is not left late. If you think you have already passed the window, that is not an automatic cancellation of your OCI and not an automatic rejection — it is treated as a case review. A late fee of around £23 plus VFS charges may apply, and some cases may go through OCI Miscellaneous instead; the exact position is confirmed by VFS.
Worked examples
- Renewed British passport, same name, valid card → generally OCI Link.
- Changed surname on the new passport after marriage → likely OCI Miscellaneous.
- OCI issued at 16, now 21 and getting the first adult passport → generally a one-time OCI Miscellaneous, then OCI Link for later passports.
- OCI card lost or damaged → generally OCI Miscellaneous.
- Passport renewed at 58, same name → generally OCI Link (no new booklet needed for age alone).
Examples are general guidance; the route for your case is confirmed with your documents.
