OCI & surrender

Do I need to surrender my Indian passport before OCI?

If you have become a British (or other foreign) citizen and want OCI, there is usually a step that comes first: surrendering your Indian passport. This page explains why surrender generally comes before Fresh OCI, how the two stages fit together, and what happens in more complex cases. Matrix NRI is independent UK preparation support; the final decision sits with the relevant Indian authority.

Quick answer

Generally, yes. India does not recognise holding an Indian passport and a foreign passport at the same time, so once you acquire British citizenship the usual route is to surrender your Indian passport and obtain a surrender or renunciation certificate — and that step generally comes before a Fresh OCI application. Surrender and OCI are two separate stages. If you are not sure where you stand, send your details on WhatsApp and we confirm the right order before you book anything.

Why surrender comes first

When you become a British citizen, your Indian citizenship generally ends, and the Indian passport is no longer valid to hold. India treats surrender of that passport as a formal step that produces a surrender or renunciation certificate. Because Fresh OCI is for foreign nationals of Indian origin, the surrender step usually needs to be in place first so your status is clear. In short: British citizenship, then surrender of the Indian passport, then Fresh OCI.

The two stages (separate appointments)

Surrender and OCI are handled as separate stages, not one combined appointment.

Stage 1

Surrender

You apply to surrender the Indian passport and receive the surrender / renunciation certificate.

Stage 2

Fresh OCI

Once the surrender certificate is issued, the Fresh OCI application generally follows.

The gap between the two is often around four to eight weeks, depending on when the surrender certificate is issued and the current processing position — it is confirmed by the authority and VFS rather than fixed. If both stages are booked at the same VFS centre, that is the location only — it does not mean the same day.

Doing them together or separately

Many people prepare both stages so they follow on smoothly — surrender first, then Fresh OCI once the certificate is issued. Matrix NRI can prepare the surrender on its own, or plan both stages together so the order and documents line up. Either way, Stage 2 generally begins once the surrender certificate is in hand.

When it is straightforward

If you still have your Indian passport, your details are consistent across documents, and you have not travelled on the Indian passport since becoming a British citizen, surrender is generally a clean step followed by Fresh OCI. We prepare the file, format the photo and signature, and guide your VFS appointment.

When it needs a case review

Some situations are not automatically a problem but generally need a closer look before booking:

  • the Indian passport was used to travel after you acquired British citizenship,
  • the Indian passport is lost, or an older Indian passport is missing,
  • your name differs across passport, certificate, or marriage documents,
  • you are unsure whether a surrender or renunciation was done before.

In these cases additional steps or charges may apply, and the exact position is confirmed by the relevant authority. Send your details and we review the case rather than guessing.

What about children and spouses?

A foreign spouse or a UK-born child generally follows a different route — a spouse may be eligible through marriage, and a UK-born child may apply through a parent's Indian passport or OCI history, often without a surrender step of their own. We confirm each family member's route separately.

Fees

Each service shows its fee on its own page, so the cost is clear before you book. Government and VFS fees are separate and confirmed by VFS at submission. We confirm what applies to your case before you pay anything.

Common questions

Do I have to surrender my Indian passport before OCI?
Generally yes. India does not recognise holding both passports, so surrender (with a surrender / renunciation certificate) usually comes before a Fresh OCI application.
Can I apply for OCI and surrender at the same time?
They are separate stages. Surrender generally comes first; Fresh OCI generally follows once the surrender certificate is issued. Many people prepare both together so they follow on smoothly.
How long between surrender and OCI?
Often around four to eight weeks, depending on when the surrender certificate is issued and the current processing position — confirmed by the authority and VFS, not fixed by us.
I travelled on my Indian passport after getting British citizenship — is that a problem?
It is not automatically a problem, but it generally needs a case review before booking, and additional steps or charges may apply. The exact position is confirmed by the relevant authority.
I lost my Indian passport — can I still surrender?
There is generally still a route, but a lost passport usually needs the case reviewed first so the file is prepared correctly. Send us the details.
Does my UK-born child need to surrender anything?
Generally no — a UK-born child usually applies for OCI through a parent's Indian passport or OCI history, without a surrender step of their own.
How much does surrender cost?
Each service shows its fee on its own page; government and VFS fees are separate and confirmed by VFS. Message us and we confirm what applies.
Can Matrix NRI handle surrender and OCI together?
Yes. We can prepare the surrender on its own, or plan both stages so the order and documents line up. The final decision sits with the relevant authority.
