Common Questions

Quick answers — OCI Link vs OCI Misc

If you're still unsure after the checker, these clarify the most common scenarios.

What is the 90-day rule and what happens if I miss it?
OCI cardholders should update/link their new foreign passport details with their OCI record within 90 days of receiving the new passport. If this is not completed on time, a late fee/penalty (currently around £23 plus VFS charges) may apply, and some cases may need to be processed through OCI Miscellaneous Services instead of standard online linking. We recommend completing the update well within the window to avoid additional steps.
I am past 90 days — what should I do?
Don't worry — your OCI is not automatically cancelled. The case simply needs proper review. WhatsApp us your dates and OCI details — we confirm whether your case can still be processed online with a late fee, or whether it needs to go through Miscellaneous Services via VFS. Either way, we handle the entire process and confirm costs before you pay anything.
OCI was issued below age 20, but now I'm 20+ and passport changed — what to do?
For OCI holders below the age of 20, each new passport requires online passport detail update/linking. Once the applicant turns 20 and receives the first new passport after that, a one-time OCI re-issue/new booklet is required — apply via OCI Miscellaneous / New Booklet (£125). After this one-time re-issue, future passport changes will be standard OCI Link.
I'm over 50 with a new passport — do I need a new OCI booklet?
Turning 50 does NOT require a new OCI booklet under current rules. Online passport update/linking is generally sufficient. However, the update should still be completed within 90 days of receiving the new passport. For example, if you are 55 and your passport has changed, you should complete the OCI passport update within 90 days — apply via OCI Link with New Passport (£100).
My passport changed and I'm still under 20 — what service do I need?
For OCI holders below the age of 20, each new passport requires online passport detail update/linking — apply via OCI Link with New Passport (£100). A new OCI booklet is NOT required at every renewal under 20 — that is a common misconception. The one-time new booklet requirement applies at the first passport AFTER turning 20.
OCI first issued at age 20+ and passport changed within 90 days — which service?
If your OCI was first issued at age 20 or above, your passport has just changed, you are within 90 days, and there are no other changes (name, nationality, DOB, etc.), use OCI Link with New Passport (£100). This is the most common case and is processed online without a VFS visit.
When do I need OCI Miscellaneous / New Booklet (£125)?
Use OCI Miscellaneous for: name change (marriage) or name mismatch with OCI, DOB correction / mismatch, nationality change, significant facial appearance change, OCI lost or damaged, or the one-time new booklet at the first passport after turning 20 (when OCI was originally issued below age 20).
OCI obtained through spouse and passport changed — what to do?
If your OCI was obtained through spouse eligibility and your passport has changed, your OCI details should be updated with the new passport within the recommended timeline — apply via OCI Link with New Passport (£100). Spouse-based linking generally requires additional supporting documents such as a declaration of subsisting marriage and the spouse's passport/OCI documents — we send you the exact checklist after WhatsApp confirmation.
Lost or damaged OCI — what's the process?
OCI lost or damaged falls under OCI Miscellaneous / New Booklet (£125). A new booklet is required — simple linking is not possible. A police report may be required for lost cards. We guide you through the full re-issue process from start to finish.
